In 2023, various prototypes of PSVR2 were showcased in playstation.blog.
Development of PSVR2 has begun at the beginning of 2017.

Main Unit

Outside-in / See-through Prototype

Heavily modded PSVR unit.
Features IR LEDs for outside-in tracking and a see-through camera placed on the front of the unit.
1x HDMI, 1x AUX.

Outside-in Evaluation Prototype

Heavily modded PSVR unit.
Features more IR LEDs on the front of the headset for testing tracking capabilities.
Created in parallel with the Outside-in / See-through Prototype.
1x HDMI, 1x AUX, 1x USB.

Inside-out Prototype

Heavily modded PSVR unit.
Features 4 cameras on the headset for inside-out tracking.
Created to evaluate the headset's new tracking capabilities.
1x HDMI, 1x AUX, 4x USB.

Tracking Camera Positioning Prototype

Used for considering the position and angles of the four cameras.
The position and angle of each camera can be finely adjusted by using dial.

Tracking System Evaluation Prototype

Heavily modded PSVR unit.
Prototype for testing the four cameras on the front of the headset by connecting them to an evaluation board.
This was performed prior to the production of the SoC (system-on-chip), which is responsible for integrating all components.

Eye-tracking Evaluation Prototype 2

Model: Proto-D2
Prototype for collecting eye-tracking data from testers.
Testers were asked to look at different screens to test the eye tracking, data of the recordings were used for machine-learning.
The sides of the device can be opened, so that the developers can visually check the distance between the lens and the eyes to confirm the device is being worn at the correct lens distance.
Rumble motor was installed for testing how the motor affects eye tracking and head tracking.
Still uses parts from PSVR unit.

Skeleton Prototype

PSVR2 unit with transparent casing.

CAU-ZVR1

Speculated prototype model name for PSVR2.
See CAU-ZVR1.
